Surplus Vehicle Sale

Buying surplus vehicles from IU

As university vehicles are replaced, the retired vehicles (“surplus units”) are offered for sale to the public.

We notify individuals on our email list and add the vehicles to this website as they go on sale.

How to buy a vehicle

Vehicles are available for inspection and purchase at Fleet Services for 14 days after they are retired from service. If they are not purchased during this 14-day window, they are sent to national auction and are available through ARI Auto Direct.

Keep the following in mind when considering buying a retired vehicle:

  • Prices are set at or below average wholesale values for similar vehicles in our area. Pricing is not negotiable and does not include sales tax. Sales tax is collected at the time of purchase. A sales fee of $232.00 is added to the final purchase price of the vehicle.
  • Vehicles may not be test-driven, but may be started. Full maintenance records are available for inspection.
  • Keys and the vehicle will not be released to you until you have received the title to the vehicle from ARI. This process takes 10 days and there are no exceptions to this requirement.
  • University departments cannot purchase these vehicles. Departments in need of transportation options can lease a vehicle through Fleet Services.

If you are interested in purchasing a retired surplus vehicle, contact Amanda Wilson, at amawilso@indiana.edu.
